Getting a grinder into a Bendigo backyard

The inner suburbs were built for foot traffic and horse carts, not tracked machinery. Miners' cottages in Ironbark, Long Gully and North Bendigo were squeezed onto small blocks, often with a side path only wide enough for a bin and a rear fence backing onto a laneway. Quarry Hill and Flora Hill add slope to the equation, with driveways that climb steeply from the street and retaining walls between terraces. Closer to the CBD, on-street parking is tight and loading has to be planned around the neighbours. All of that decides which machine we bring. We run a narrow-access grinder that fits through a standard side gate for the tight jobs, and a larger machine on tracks for open blocks on the fringe where a big pine or gum stump needs more grunt. What the stump is made of matters as much as where it sits. The elms that fill the older streets do not die quietly: cut one down and the root system sends up suckers across the lawn and under the fence for years, so an elm stump needs grinding deeper and wider than most, with the main lateral roots chased out as far as practical. Peppercorns and privet behave similarly. Radiata pine and cypress stumps grind easily but are large, and the resinous grindings are not much good as mulch. On the bush edge in Spring Gully, Strathdale or along the eastern side of Kennington, grey box and red ironbark stumps are the opposite problem: some of the densest timber in Victoria, slow going on the cutting wheel and hard on teeth, but they do not sucker and the ground around them is usually open.

Then there is the ground itself. A large part of the inner city sits on mining sludge and waste quartz, a metre or so of it in places, washed down over the original clay from the puddling mills and batteries of the gold years. Quartz is murder on grinder teeth, and old gullies like the one Bendigo Creek now runs through in its concrete channel are where the deepest fill accumulated. Out on the fringe the soil is generally shallow and rocky over the Box-Ironbark ridges, which limits how deep we can sensibly go, but a standard grind of 200 to 300 mm below the surface is enough to re-turf or garden over, and we go deeper where you are planning to pave or build.

What happens afterwards is your call. Grindings mixed with soil make a reasonable mulch from elm, oak and eucalypt stumps and can backfill the hole to settle over a season. If you want to replant a tree in the same spot, the grindings should come out and be replaced with clean soil, because a hole full of decomposing wood robs nitrogen from a new sapling. If you are re-seeding lawn, take the grindings out and fill with topsoil for the same reason.

How a stump job runs

1. Quote. Send a photo with something for scale, or we come out. The price depends on stump diameter, species, how many, and how far the machine has to travel to reach them.

3. Grinding. The stump is taken down in passes to the agreed depth, then the surface roots are chased out so the ground can be levelled without lumps appearing next spring.
4. Grindings. Raked back into the hole and mounded to settle, or loaded and removed and the hole backfilled with soil, whichever you asked for.
5. Finish. Paths swept, fence and gate checked, lawn raked. Ready to seed, plant or pave.
