Tree pruning for California Gully homes and yards

The best way to understand tree pruning in California Gully is to picture the yard when the crew drives off. The big box in the corner is still there, still shading the west side of the house at four o'clock, but you can see sky through it. The dead limbs that hung over the clothesline for two winters are on the trailer. There is a pile of chip by the back gate if you asked for it, a stack of rounds by the shed if the limbs were worth burning, and no sawdust on the path.

What you are left with

• Light back in the house. Thinning a crown by a modest amount lets afternoon sun and winter light through without stripping the shade a cottage needs in January.
• Dead wood on the ground, not on the roof. Every dead limb we can reach comes out. On an old box or ironbark that can be a trailer-load.
• Mulch, if you want it. Chipped branches make a coarse mulch that suits the dry, stony beds around here. We leave it in a pile where you say, or take it away.
• Wood, if it is worth keeping. Box and ironbark limbs of any real size are cut to length and stacked. Peppercorn and pine offcuts go through the chipper instead.
• Clearance measured, not guessed. Branches are held back from gutters, the service line and the neighbour's roof with room to grow for a season or two.
• A clean site. Paths and driveways blown off, lawn raked, gate shut behind us.

What the day actually involves

Most California Gully pruning is done by a climber rather than from a bucket, because the side access on a cottage block rarely fits a platform. The climber sets an anchor high in the crown and works outwards along each limb. What gets cut depends on the brief: deadwooding takes out dead and dying branches and is the most common job on old box, ironbark and yellow gum; crown thinning removes a proportion of small live branches to reduce wind load and let light through; crown lifting takes off the lowest limbs so you can walk or park underneath; and a reduction brings the outer crown back to side branches when the tree has outgrown its space.

Every cut follows AS 4373: just outside the branch collar, no flush cuts, no stubs, and no more taken from the live crown than the tree can seal over. Two other jobs come up constantly in this suburb. Pruning for California Gully's trees and blocks

California Gully is old mining ground five kilometres up Eaglehawk Road from the centre of Bendigo, and its native trees, grey box, yellow box and red ironbark, regrew over mullock and filled shafts after the mines closed. They have shallow, stony root runs and shed dead wood every dry summer. Deadwooding every couple of years is the most useful thing an owner can do for one of these trees, and far cheaper than an emergency call after a limb lands on the carport.

The planted trees need different handling. Peppercorns, which line a lot of the older streets, weep into paths and over fences and respond well to a light lift and thin; cut them hard and they sprout. Radiata and cypress pines cannot be cut back into bare wood, so pruning is limited to lifting and removing dead lower whorls. In the newer subdivisions and unit developments on the larger old blocks, the trees are young and the job is formative pruning: establishing a single leader and removing crossing branches and co-dominant stems while the cuts are small. Ten minutes on a five-year-old tree saves a reduction on a twenty-five-year-old one.
