Tree Removal in Axedale, From the Crew That Lives Here

Picture a few acres on the Bendigo side of the township with Campaspe frontage at the bottom of the paddock. Halfway up sits a river red gum that was probably standing before the pub opened in 1855. It has been shedding limbs every hot summer, one of them went through the roof of the hay shed, and there is a hollow at the base you can put an arm into. The owner wants it gone before the next branch lands on the tractor.

The first thing we do is walk the tree rather than quote it from the driveway. Red gums hide decay well, so we sound the trunk, check the root plate for movement and look at where the weight is sitting. A tree with a heavy lean toward the shed and a hollow butt is not a candidate for a straight fell.

On that kind of tree we climb or work from the elevated platform, take the limbs off over the shed with rigging so they are lowered under control instead of dropped, and reduce the trunk to a size that can be felled safely into the paddock. Where a tree is clear of anything that matters, a wedge and a pull line does the job in a fraction of the time, and the price reflects that.

Red gum is some of the best firewood in Victoria, so most Axedale owners want the trunk left in rounds beside the wood shed. We can also split it on site or take everything away if you have no use for it. Branches go through the chipper and the chip either stays for the garden or leaves on the truck. If the stump sits in a mowing area or beside a fence line it gets ground out; in an open paddock plenty of owners are happy to leave it cut low.

Conditions that shape tree removal around Axedale

River red gums on the Campaspe. The streamside vegetation through the Axedale reserve is dominated by mature river red gums, and many of them are habitat for swift parrots and squirrel gliders. Trees on the river reserve belong to the reserve, not the adjoining block, so we confirm where the boundary sits before anyone starts a saw. Red gums on private frontage still get assessed for hollows and nesting before removal is recommended.

Floods and root plates. When Lake Eppalock spilled in October 2022 the Campaspe came through the township hard enough to put the highway bridge out of action. Trees on the flats that stood in moving water for days can end up with scoured, loosened roots and a new lean. A tree that looks fine from the house but has cracked soil around the base after a flood is worth a second look.

Box woodland on the rises. Away from the river the country is grey box and yellow box grassy woodland. Box timber is dense and slow to rot, so a dead box can stand for years before it falls, and it is heavy to rig.

Sandy ground near the quarry. Axedale has a working sand quarry and much of the land around it sits on free-draining sandy soil. Big trees on sand can have shallow root plates and are the first to go over in a wet, windy week.

Planning overlays and bushfire. A large part of the district is heavily vegetated and sits under a Bushfire Management Overlay, and stretches of the river corridor carry environmental significance controls. Under those overlays a permit can be needed to remove native trees, and native vegetation rules apply on larger rural blocks. Roads, gates and powerlines. Removals beside the McIvor Highway need traffic management, and the single-wire earth-return lines that cross paddocks out here are easy to forget until a limb is swinging near one. Winter paddocks on the flats get boggy, so a big removal is sometimes better timed for autumn or after the ground firms up.

How we run the job, start to finish

1. Call or message. Tell us roughly where the tree is and what worries you about it. Being Axedale-based, we can often swing past the same day or the next.
2. On-site assessment. A qualified arborist looks at decay, lean, root condition, what is underneath the tree, nearby powerlines and which overlays apply. If tree pruning in Axedale would keep the tree safely instead of removing it, we say so.
3. Set price. You get a written figure for the whole job, cleanup included, before anything is booked.
4. Permits and booking. If a permit is needed we help with the paperwork, then lock in a date that suits the weather and the paddock.
