Most calls for tree removal in Junortoun start with a tree that has become a worry: a grey box shedding limbs over the machinery shed, a dead yellow gum too close to the house under the bushfire overlay, or a row of windbreak pines now leaning over the driveway. What owners rarely think about until the crew arrives is that a mature paddock tree is several tonnes of dense hardwood, and on acreage there is no reason to pay to cart all of it away.

Where the wood goes after a Junortoun tree removal
Firewood. Grey box, yellow box, red box and yellow gum are among the densest, slowest-burning firewood in Victoria, and they are exactly what stands on the older Junortoun blocks. If you run a wood heater we cut the trunk and heavier limbs into rounds and stack them where you want, or put the lot through our splitter. If you have no use for it we take it back to Axedale for our own firewood supply in Bendigo, which usually brings your price down.
Mulch. The canopy and anything under about 150 mm goes through the chipper, and owners generally have us tip the chip in a pile for garden beds, tracks and the bare ground under the remaining trees. Inside the bushfire overlay, keep deep beds of fresh chip away from the house walls and decking.
Habitat. Old box trees are full of hollows, and Junortoun sits inside a wildlife corridor that runs along Splitters Creek between Axe Creek and the Greater Bendigo National Park. Where a tree is dead but nowhere near a target we can leave a tall habitat stump standing with its hollows intact, or lay hollow trunk sections along the back fence for the reptiles and echidnas.
Gone. Some owners want a clean paddock and nothing left. The truck and trailer take timber, chip and rakings away, and the stump is ground below ground level so the area can be mown or fenced straight over; our stump grinding in Junortoun page covers that.
Getting the tree down safely
Every removal begins with an assessment: the lean, the crown weight, the soundness of the trunk (fungal brackets at the base are common in dead box trees) and everything within falling distance. Out in an open paddock with clear fall room, a straight fell with wedges is the quickest and cleanest method. Closer to buildings a climber dismantles the crown limb by limb, rigging each section on ropes so it is lowered rather than dropped, and the trunk comes down in lengths. Two points particular to Junortoun. Powercor lines run along the McIvor Highway and up many of the long driveways, so a tree with branches inside the powerline clearance space needs a different approach, and we will tell you plainly whether it is ours to do. And much of the suburb is Rural Conservation Zone or Low Density Residential Zone, with bushfire and vegetation overlays across parts of it, so a planning permit can apply to removing native trees. A typical Junortoun removal
Picture a two-hectare block off a side road from the highway with a 400 m gravel drive. A grey box about 25 m tall has died over the last couple of summers and stands 15 m from the house, with the shed on one side and the boundary fence on the other, so it cannot simply be felled. We arrive early with the truck, chipper and mini loader, come in through the paddock gate onto firm ground, and set an exclusion zone. The climber takes the crown out piece by piece and rigs the limbs down onto the paddock side. Once the crown is off, the bare trunk is felled into the open with a pull line for insurance. The trunk is cut into rounds and stacked by the shed for next winter, the brush is chipped into a pile for the vegetable beds, and the stump is ground so the owner can mow over it. The job is done in a day.
Local conditions that shape a removal here
Old woodland on the older blocks. The remnant box-ironbark woodland in Manning Reserve, with its yellow gum, grey box and red box, is the woodland the original acreage subdivisions were cut out of, and the big scattered paddock trees are its survivors. They are worth keeping wherever the risk is low; where they have died over a target, they are heavy, technical removals.
Splitters Creek. The creek runs west to east beside the highway and on to Axe Creek at Longlea. Trees along it hold the banks and carry the wildlife corridor, so removals near the creek line are ones we are careful about. If the tree is a genuine hazard it can go; if it is merely untidy we will say so.
Fire. The whole suburb is within the Bushfire Prone Area, with the Wellsford forest to the north. Dead trees close to a house are a legitimate fuel and access concern, and taking them down in autumn or winter, before fire restrictions and the summer storms, is the sensible timing.
Newer estates. Removals at McIvor Forest and the other recent subdivisions are more about crowded planting than remnant giants.
